Topic of the week: ALL ABOUT CATS

This months topic is all things cats! We will walk through fun facts, common allergies, health differences between male and female cats, and any additional details to keep your cat healthy! So lets get into it…

Cool Cat Facts!!

  • Cats cannot taste sweet flavors. For example a marshmallow taste like a potato to a cat!!

  • Male cats are usually more cuddly and friendly than female cats. This is simply to do with the different hormone levels.

  • In ancient Egypt, cats were considered magical and were worshipped as gods.

  • Neutered male cats live 62% longer than un-neutered cats, and spayed females live 39% longer than non spayed female cats.

  • Each cat's nose print is unique, much like human fingerprints

  • Cats are actually lactose intolerant. That's right — cats actually can't digest milk after 4 weeks of age. There's no nutritional value for cats in drinking cow's milk

Cat Health Information

On Average, female cats have less health issues and live longer than male cats. Cats are naturally dehydrated which can lead to urinary tract infections, and in male cats can cause kidney stones or bladder blockages, which can lead to death if not treated almost immediately. This is an overly common situation in male cats so it is very important to have your cats on a somewhat wet diet, even if that just means adding water to their food bowl. Whatever it takes to raise their water intake and keep them hydrated.

Cats are generally clean animals, if you see a cat that has a matted or un-groomed coat they are most likely extremely dehydrated causing their saliva glands to not produce enough saliva to clean themselves. So next time you see a straggly stray, give them some water. You might save that cats life.

Essential Oils vs Cats

Many essential oils are toxic to cats, including oil Bergamot, Cinnamon, Clove, Eucalyptus, European pennyroyal, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, lime and orange, Lemongrass, Rose, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Tea tree, Thyme, Wintergreen, peppermint, spearmint and mint and Ylang-ylang, are all poisonous to cats. Ingestion, inhalation and skin exposure of these oils can be toxic and cause sudden death syndrome in cats.

In short, there aren't any safe essential oils for cats; they all have the potential to be toxic to your fur baby. As the ASPCA pointed out, "In their concentrated form (100%), essential oils can absolutely be a danger for pets," including when the oil is placed on their skin, fur or paws which can lead to injection when grooming.

We hope this blog helped answer some of your questions and we will see you next month for a whole new topic!
