Why does it matter what I feed my pet? They can eat people food can’t they?

As we learn more and more about our pets' health, we begin to realize that the choices in what we feed them really do matter. Just like a healthier diet affects our own health, the food our pets eat has a major impact on their life. Typical human food is much too rich and fatty for dogs to properly digest; eating it can lead to vomiting, diarrhea and even more severe conditions like pancreatitis. Many human foods also contain an unhealthy amount of sodium for dogs. Suite Life Nutrition consults will review the following: Pet weight, current feeding schedule and diet, age and overall health of pet, and a plan to help you make necessary adjustments.

How do I know if my pet is overweight?

When a dog becomes overweight, it negatively affects their health. On average, obesity takes off two years of a dog’s life expectancy. The risks associated with overweight dogs include heart disease, respiratory issues, high blood pressure, arthritis, and skin irritants. Their health and quality of life is much better when kept at a healthy weight.

So how can you tell if your pet is overweight? The best test when evaluating your dog’s weight is to assess their body condition score. This can be done with visual inspection and palpation. Easily palatable ribs, an evident waist when viewed from above, and a visible abdominal tuck from the side are all signs of a dog at a healthy weight.
