Topic of the week: FIRST TIME PUPPY OWNERS

This weeks blog topic is for first time pet owners! We know it can be confusing to figure out the dos and don’ts when getting a new puppy. Everything from shots, socialization, food and potty training we are here to help!

So, where do I start?

First, let's talk breed. Before you get your new friend it is important to do some research into the breed you want so you can prepare for the dogs needs. Things to consider are; How active are you? Do you have children? Do you have a yard? Will this dog be primarily inside or outside? Can you afford vet visits, food, ect? Do you have time to potty train and interact with this puppy for more than 4hrs a day? Does this dog need extreme socialization? Will it need to be regularly groomed? Can you handle having a puppy?

What you don’t want to do is get a new puppy and be unprepared and unaware of its needs. Get a dog that fits your lifestyle, do not get a dog to try to change your lifestyle. What we mean by this is; do not get an athletic dog because YOU need motivation to go outside and take walks. All dogs will take walks with you, get a pet that fits the life you currently live to avoid the accident of not being able to provide what your pet needs.

Lets talk shots and vaccinations…

Puppies need regular shots to keep them healthy and avoid airborne diseases. Below is a short guide to what your puppy will need and at what age. Based on your lifestyle, your puppy may need additional vaccinations for boarding, inside dogs, ect.

6-8 weeks: Distemper and Parvo Virus (Optional: Bordetella)

10-12 weeks: DHPP (vaccines for distemper, adenovirus [hepatitis], parainfluenza, and parvovirus) (Optional: Influenza, Leptospirosis, Bordetella, Lyme disease per lifestyle as recommended by veterinarian)

16-18 weeks: DHPP, rabies (Optional: Influenza, Lyme disease, Leptospirosis, Bordetella per lifestyle)

12-16 months: DHPP, rabies (Optional: Coronavirus, Leptospirosis, Bordetella, Lyme disease)

Every 1-3 years: DHPP, Rabies as required by law (Optional: Influenza, Coronavirus, Leptospirosis, Bordetella, Lyme disease per lifestyle)

This is a big one… POTTY TRAINING!

Of course if you have an outside only dog this is not something that will need to be taught, but inside dogs will need to start potty training at 4 weeks old.

Our trainer recommends taking your puppy outside every 2 hours and immediately after food or water is consumed. The goal is to not let them potty inside AT ALL, the moment they potty inside your training just got tougher so be on high alert. If your puppy starts sniffing the ground, circling the same spots or goes to a spot they don’t typically visit these could be signs they are about to potty. If you see your puppy potty on the floor immediately pick them up and take them to a grassy spot for them to finish their business. At one point it will click in your pets mind that when they are in grass, they can potty. When they are not in grass, they cannot.

Puppies NEED to be socialized!

This is VERY VERY important when it comes to raising a pup. An unsocialized puppy can grow to be timid, anxious and even aggressive towards dogs and/or humans. If your puppy has all of its updated vaccinations take them everywhere you can! The more they see the world the better dog you will have. Go to dog parks, regular parks, pick your kids up with the puppy, walk around homedepot or dog allowed stores, let people pet them, walk around your neighborhood, ect. Anything and everything you can do to get your puppy around others! This will benefit them drastically in the future and will build an even stronger connection with the owner as the dog realizes just how much they can trust you!

We hope this blog helped answer some of your questions and we will see you next month for a whole new topic!
